For all the Scouts working on merit badges, meet at the church at 6:30.  You will be participating in a Stake Merit Badge night held at the Twin Peaks Building in Poway.

At 7:00pm

The YM will watch the conclusion of the movie "Forever Strong(Popcorn and soda will be provided)

This movie is based on true events.  The Highland High School Rugby Team (SLC, UT) racked up 379 wins and only 9 losses, and won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 18 OUT OF 24 YEARS.

The action picks up the the second half as a bitter rivalry develops  between Rick (who has spent several months in Juvenile detention), and his former best friend Lars,  (who has abandoned his standards and discipline.)  We will also discover some new information about Rick's father (who is the coach for the rival apposing team)

After the movie we will have a brief discussion regarding courage, commitment and conviction.

This will be a day long EFY type conference for Priests and Laurels only.  Bro. Wilcox, a well known and in demand CES/EFY speaker, is flying in from Utah to lead the conference.  There will be activities, classes, good food, service activities and a closing testimony meeting.

Snowboarding Trip

Notes from Jim Sabin

We are finalizing the head count for our snowboarding/ski trip to Mtn High on Saturday February 6th.  We will be meeting at the church at 5:45am so that we can leave promptly at 6:00 - it is about a 2 hour drive and we need to make sure we are there when the resort opens at 8:00 to get our rentals taken care of.  The cost is $30 for a snowboard rental, $25 for a ski rental, $22 for a lift ticket if you are 12.  If you are a scout and 13 or older the cost is $32, otherwise the cost is $47 for the lift ticket.
If youth bring $70 you should have a few dollars left for a snack.  I recommend bringing your own lunch to eat on the lift, otherwise it costs about $10 for a hamburger and fries and there is a long line to wait in.  Please let me know if you will be going by Tuesday January 26th so that we can get an accurate group reservation and have enough transportation arranged.  As always there is an open invitation for any fathers that would like to come.

Summer Camp

This week I am also putting down a $200 non-refundable deposit for scout camp and so need to know if you will be attending by Tuesday the 26th as well.  This year we will going to Fiesta Island which offers many water sports as well as merit badges.  I am submitting the request for the week of July 25-31.  The cost for the camp is $350/boy.  Please let me know if you will or will not be attending so that I don't lose money unnecessarily.  Thanks!

Carrizo Gorge, Goat Canyon Trestle

One of San Diego’s Best Kept Secret - The desert mountains to the east of San Diego include rugged wilderness areas noted for bighorn sheep, Swainson's hawks, golden eagles, and oases surrounded by native California palms. The Carrizo Gorge at the southern edge of Anza-Borrego State Park is a spectacular chasm and home to the Goat Canyon railroad trestle. Two hundred feet tall and 750 feet long, it's the tallest curved wooden trestle ever built in the world.

Girls Camp was GREAT!

Come ye and let us go up to the Mountain of the Lord and He will teach us of His ways and we will walk in His Paths.  -- Isa 2:3

For our Spiritual preparation for Camp, We are memorizing Joseph Smith's Prayer found in the Pearl of Great Price pg. 49. This is a scripture mastery for seminary this year.

We started memorizing v. 16 last week. This week we are working on v.17.

To memorize, read the verse through out loud 3 times. Then write the first letter of each word on paper. Read the verse through by using only the first letter of the verse. Repeat this 3 times. You will be amazed at how the verse jumps out as you look at the first letter!

Repeat this process every day during your scripture study time. Soon, you will be able to quote the verse without looking at the letters. Only do 1 verse at a time.

You will accomplish this challenge.

Pearl of Great Price pg. 49

16 But, exerting all my powers to acall upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into bdespair and abandon myself to destruction just at this moment of great alarm.  I saw a pillar of clight exactly over my head, above the brightness of the dsun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.

Raise Your Standards High

On September 2, the Young Women of the Rancho Bernardo Ward took a stand for virtue by planting a flag on top of 4S Ranch Mountain.  Sitting on top of a 22 foot pole, and measuring 4 feet x 6 feet, the flag can be clearly seen as far away as I-15.  Check out more pictures.
